Assignment

Dear Parents:  Each day, students should complete 4 multiplication problems.  They must show their work.  This is about learning the process of multiplication.  Students may use any method they choose traditional, partial products, or lattice. Showing their work is how students learn where they are making mistakes.  They may use a calculator to check their work including their facts.

I have shared the urgency that students learn their multiplication facts and process of multiplication.

If students lose their homework sheets.  They can get the problems from this website.  If that isn't possible, they should create 4  2-digit multiplication problems and solve them.  In creating 2 digit numbers they should use digits 1 to 9.

We will be doing this for several weeks.  We will continue it with division eventually.
 Thank you,
Mrs. Albee

Writing:
Due to the snow days and testing schedule, we had to delay our work with our writing.  Now, we are back at it.  Students have chosen a Maine animal to research.  They have a planning organizer with questions they have about their animal.  Once they developed some questions, student began researching these questions.  All this part should be done.  Some ongoing research may still need to be done.
Yesterday, today, and tomorrow students have begun to draft 3 paragraphs.  Each section of their planner have questions on one aspect of the animal.  They should be developing at least a paragraph for each section.  Three sections should have a paragraph written by the time we come back to school on February 23rd.  All students have been told that it is homework if they don't complete this during class time.

Students should work on their math stickies and have the pages corrected and finished by Friday.

Assignment

Writing:
Students have been working on creating boxes and bullets and writing a paragraph about an idea.  By now they should have several.
They have been asked to choose one of those topic ideas and "frame" it.  This only means to use boxes and bullets for each of their reasons that supports their claim (opinion).  They need this next week so they can focus on finishing their essay, and be ready for lessons that will help them write this piece.

Due:

Assignment

This past week our writing lessons have been about taking people, places, or objects that we care about and using boxes and bullets to expand our ideas about them. Then we were to write a paragraph on one of those ideas. We also created a map of places that are important to us. Everyday students should have created a box and bullet and written at least a paragraph.

Friday, we worked on analyzing “Qualities of a Good Free Write”. Afterwards students began a free write and focused on one area we talked about to work on as a writer. This included:

  • comparing things and making sure you explain what you mean

  • keep on writing freely by letting any thoughts come out

  • say the BIG idea over and over in different ways as if trying to get it right

  • stays for a long time on one idea (over a page on the same idea)

  • goes from Big idea to small example to Big idea.

Students have been told what should be accomplished and asked to take writing home if they didn't finish in the classroom.

Please ask your child how many pieces of writing they have worked on. They should say somewhere between 4 to 7 pieces. Ask them what they wrote their free write on and what he/she worked on as a writer.

Assignment

Below are examples of the work students are doing in the classroom for persuasive writing.  Students need to complete the boxes and bullets before writing the paragraph.  They have had classroom time to complete this assignment last week and today.  Students who haven't finished this work have been asked to take this home and complete it tonight.  They only need to write one paragraph.

Example of boxes and bullets using a reason they wrote about their opinion from the lesson before.

Toppings

  • candies

  • special stuff

  • sauces

Example of introductory paragraph:
I love ice cream for many reasons.  I can add different toppings.  There are hundreds of flavors.  In addition, it is refreshing on a hot day.

Example of paragraph for one of the reasons:
The first reason I love ice cream is because you can add different toppings.  There are more kinds of candies than I can name.  There is special stuff like shredded coconut and nuts.  Also, there are a lot of sauces to go on top.

Due:

Assignment

In math today, students were to complete math box 3-7 pg. 65 and problem # 2 on page 63A.  If students didn't complete these assignments, they have been instructed to complete it for homework.

In writing today, students were taught the structure of boxes and bullets as a graphic organizer.  They are to write an opinion in the box and for each bullet write a reason that supports your opinion.   If not done, this is homework as well.
  Ex.

          I love Ice Cream

  • Many flavors

  • different toppings

  • refreshening on hot days

Assignment

As we begin our year, we need to create our writing notebooks to reflect us and what we like.  So we are asking 4th grade students to find pictures, stickers, and paper that they can use to decorate their writer's notebooks.  We would like to work on this next week.  Please bring these things in by Monday, 9/8/14.  Thank you!
