Resolution Passed for the Naming of the New Middle/High School Facility
At the January 7, 2020 Board meeting, a formal resolution was passed announcing the work of the RSU 24 naming committee for the new middle/high school facility. After research and consideration regarding the history of the name behind the current Sumner Memorial High School and the contributions of Dr. Charles M. Sumner to the greater local educational community, the committee created an online and paper based survey to gather detailed feedback about the future high school and middle school name(s). With an overwhelming number of 689 total responses from community members, Alumni, and students currently in grades 3-12, the committee was able to make an informed decision that upheld traditions, honored the work of Dr. Sumner, as well as supported the identity of two separate institutions that will lie under one roof. With a unanimous vote, the RSUB designated the forthcoming middle/high school facility in Sullivan, Maine to be named, in two parts, Sumner Memorial High School and Sumner Middle School. The property and structures on it will collectively be named the Charles M. Sumner Learning Campus.
